Nominations are open for this Years Believe Sports Awards

Nominations have opened for the Borough’s 2018 Believe Sports Awards.

The prestigious annual event is a chance to shine a spotlight on those volunteers, coaches and clubs passionate about local sport, as well as celebrating the achievements of local athletes - all wrapped up in a special ceremony organised by Inspiring healthy lifestyles on behalf of Wigan Council.

Whether you want to recognise a blossoming young sporting career like Danni Williams who picked up the 2017 Sports Achiever of the Year at just 13 years of age or someone like the amazing Steven Johnson who took control of his life by losing six stone in six months and was promptly awarded the Changing Lifestyle Recognition Award, you can at the 2018 Believe Sports Awards.

Note: Nominations may be subject to short listing should the maximum number of nominations be reached per category

The Categories 

Coach of the Year

Sponsored by Link Contracting

  
Awarded to a community, club or school based coach who has made an impact or contribution to the development of performers in their sport or the Wigan Borough. The coach must be delivering on a voluntary basis and nominations should reflect voluntary coaching only. The nomination should reflect achievements from Sept 2017 – 27th July 2018

Club of the Year

Sponsored by Bigwave Media

  

Awarded to a sports club based in the Wigan Borough that has made a significant impact or contribution to the development of sport in the community.  Achievements to reflect the last year Sept 2017 – July 27th 2018. Nominations are accepted for community clubs only.

 

Sports Achiever of the Year

Sponsored by DFC

The sports achiever award goes to a sports performer who has made a significant improvement in their development as a sports player/athlete. Nominees should be a permanent resident of the Wigan Borough and achievements should be from Sept 2017 to 27th July 2018. Athletes cannot be professionally funded through either an NGB or UK Sport.

 

Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year

Sponsored by Agilisys

This award is given to a disabled sports performer who has made a significant improvement in their development as a sports player/athlete. Nominees should be a permanent resident of the Wigan Borough and achievements should be from Sept 2017 to 27th July 2018. Athletes cannot be professionally funded through either an NGB or UK Sport.

 

Volunteer of the Year

Sponsored by Wigan Athletic Community Trust

This award is given to a person who has volunteered their time and made a significant impact or contribution to the development of performers, club, community or school sport. The nomination should reflect achievements from Sept 2017 – 27th July 2018.

 

The Wilf Brogan Unsung Hero Award

Sponsored by F Parkinson Ltd

The unsung hero award goes to a person who has made an impact for at least a 10 year period on people, their club, a school or within the community. For nominations for people with less than 10 years’ service please consider coach or volunteer of the year awards.

Changing Lifestyle Recognition Award

Sponsored by Technogym

 

Awarded to a person that has undertaken or led a lifestyle change - improving their health, well-being and quality of life. The nominee must live or be based in the Wigan Borough. Nominations should reflect changes made from September 2017 to close of nominations on 27th July 2018.

Team of the Year

 Sponsored by Wigan Warriors Community Foundation

This award goes to a community, club or school based team that has achieved success and/or improved their performance in the last 12 months (Sept 2017 – July 27th 2018). This is a Wigan Borough only award. Nominations for this award do not go onto the Greater Manchester Sports Awards.

The Martin Lynn School Commitment to PE and Sport

Sponsored by Alliance Leisure

 

This award recognises a primary/secondary school that has demonstrated a positive contribution to sports and physical activities. It focuses on the impact on pupils that attend the school. This includes how pupils have been inspired to engage in school sports, and what benefits this had (including competition success). This award is based on achievements from Sept 2017 – July 2018. Nominations accepted from schools in the Wigan Borough.

Sports Apprentice of the Year

This award recognises an individual for their support to local initiatives and personal development over the last 12 months. Nominations to reflect development from Sept 2017 to July 2018. Apprentices should be based in the Wigan Borough. This is a Wigan Borough only award. Nominations for this award do not go onto the Greater Manchester Sports Awards.

The Deal Community Programme of the Year

Sponsored by Wigan Council

 

This award will be presented to a group or individual that has developed and delivered a programme to support people in Wigan Borough to lead healthy and active lifestyles; tackled social isolation and loneliness and/or provided positive activities that have contributed to positive mental health by creating opportunities that enable Wigan borough residents to connect to their local community.

About Believe Sports Awards

The event rewards and recognises the work of voluntary sector coaches, clubs and volunteers, as well as celebrating the achievements of local athletes.

Category winners (except Team of the Year and Sports Apprentice of the Year) go forward to represent Wigan Borough at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards.
